MIDWIVES ALLIANCE OF NORTH AMERICA

M.A.N.A.

"Throughout time,

in every culture,

there have always

been women called

to serve other women

in childbirth------

the Midwife."

What is MANA?

The Midwives' Alliance of North America is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1982. The impetus for its formation came from a group of midwives with diverse educational backgrounds who believed the time was ripe for unity.

MANA was founded to build cooperation among midwives and to promote midwifery as a standard of health care for women and childbirth.

Comprehensive midwifery care encompasses both the physical and emotional health needs of women and families and fosters self-determination throughout the childbearing cycle.

Now, and in the future, communication and strength among midwives and their supporters is vital to the preservation of the art and practice of midwifery as well as to freedom of choice in childbirth.

Goals of MANA:

Expand communications and support among North American midwives;

Represent and respond to the needs of midwives on a regional, national and international basis;

Establish midwifery care as a quality health care option and assure its accessibility to women and their newborns;

Promote research in the field of midwifery care;

Foster cooperation between midwives and other professionals and non-professionals concerned with improving the health and well being of mothers and babies; and

Affirm each woman's right, ability, and responsibility to choose appropriate health care providers and services.
