I am new to surfing the internet. I just thought I would type in Midwifery and search to see what it came up with. I'm glad I did, what a great page full of lots of information. I am a midwife and work in a very busy unit (5000 deliveries a year). I am also a mother of two boys. Jamie was born 26th May 1997 by ceasarean, because he was breech, weighing 8lbs 1oz or 3.665kg. He is now nearly three and definately going through the terrible twos, but of course we love him dearly. Ross was born 1st May 1999 also by ceasarean (for failed induction). He weighed 10lbs 2ozs or 4.6kgs. With hindsight I was quite glad I didn't have to push him out. He is now 10months old and a joy to everyone he meets, if he isn't smiling you know somethings up. Helllpppp......I was informed today that the area in which I live is adequatley covered where midwives are concerened and that it isnt unusual to qualify and be unable to get work......A tutor at the college where I plan to do the mature access course advises me to do nursing first then specialise in midwifery inorder to widen my emploment options....what do you all think?? Problem is I dont want to be a nurse...I cant imagine some of the aspects of a nurses training like laying a dead person out etc....I know there are bound to be aspects of midwifery that aren't nice but I want to be a midwife so I'll gladly do it. I have been considering midwifery as a career now for several years, but my life has been rocky to say the least. I am now a single mom with a beautiful 3 year old son. My question/concern is regarding income. Will I be able to support us on a midwife's salary? What is a typical salary? Is it possible to be in this field without a lot of outside help (I.E. My cousin Kate wants to be a midwife. She is finishing her degree at Brown then she goes to Columbia. I can't understand why she has to go to such expensive school to help birth babies. She has helped babies be born in the Dominican Republic and East Africa. When she was 8 we were in the car and the newsman on the radio reported on abortion. She asked what it meant. I was 14 I squirmed wondering what my aunt would say but she told her.And her response was "oh>" Her young life she wanted to be a marine biologist now she wants to be a midwife. I read her letter about what the women go through in Africa to have babies. It sounds horrible. I hope she does go midwife in some foreign country where the birthing process is so unbearable. She is bright, soft spoken except when she giggles and is sweet and I think that combined with her skills it would be a real comfort to the world. I, on the other hand, I can't even talk myself into getting simple bloodwork done or having a tooth pulled I have to be sedated. I doubt I will have children and thank-God I didn't remember my own birth with all that BLOOD. I think this is a great website. I like your site, it's great that there are so many people like you. I recently (5/16/99) just delivered a healthy 6lb 4oz little girl VBAC. Love your site. I'm a Bradley Method teacher ( 8 years) and the biggest midwife cheerleader in our area. I'm definetly a wannabe, but that's a little down the road as my children are small still. One little factoid about myself, 4.5 years ago, I had undiagnosed twins underwater at home. My midwives were the best, and I thank God everyday we weren't in the hospital. So calm, cool, and collected. And because of Dr. Brewers nutrition advice, I ate and ate and they were only 3 weeks early and 6'8" and 6'4". Hi! Great to be on the net...finally. I'm an independent midwife working in New Zealand. It's great to be able to practise autonomously.... hopefully the rest of the world will follow. `I am pregnant with baby #10 (lost 2 to miscarriage). We have 7 beautiful, strong, healthy children that we have been blessed with. The first two kids we had in a hospital setting--before I knew there was anything better. That was in the early 80's. Aha....a revelation...there was another way!!! Hallaluyah!!!Baby #3 came along in 1989, I had found a midwife. Oops, she didn't make it to the birth in time!But oh what a GLORIOUS birth it was! I was in babymoon for a long time!!There is nothing better than to have your space, your freedom to make your own choices, no unnecessary interventions during labor!Labor was SO much easier at home-so relaxed and comfortable and full of love and warmth.. In 1991 baby #4 comes(no she didn't make it this time either--Iam quick-2 hours start to finish).But I did not blame her at all-She was busy with other Mom's that happened to go into labor shortly before I did. We also knew the good Lord was with us through the entire time-we wer! e protected and had NO fear. Oh how I love having babies!!!!!My view on childbirth(and just about everything else)are very different than the majority.I don't believe fear belongs in labor-we should educate ourselves as much as possible.People fear what they do not understand.I believe pain comes in when we do not know what is happening in our bodies, we have grown up in a soceity that does not trust the human bodies capabilities unless it is taken over by drugs.Anyway I choose to view and feel labor not as pain but as POWERFUL,STRONG and empowering(among many other things). Now I know some of you are thinking,"She's one of those women that barely has any labor at all". DEFINITELY not true!!!!I generally start prelabor around 24weeks and with some kids it's every 5 minutes contractions until that baby is born-cont. hard enough that I'll have to stop & breathe through them.Of course Dr.'s would do all sorts of things to me & baby in this case but my midwife and I know that this! is perfectly normal for ME(baby is always in great condition & only mild cervical dilation) We moved in early 1992, found an amazingly wonderful midwife and very dear friend.She made it to babies #5&6(with whom was posterior and broke my tailbone).Baby #7 she missed-as if she could help it--I woke up, my water broke and 24 minutes later Iwas holding Zachariah in my arms!!!!!Beautiful, Wonderful, Awesome birth-just me & Bruce(my husband)welcoming that lovely baby into our hearts and hands and into our family. Well I really should quit ---Just one more thing--there is a book called "Back labor no more"---VERY helpful-very simple technique to reduce painful labor -front - back -posterior labor or just for any mom that wants to know how to shorten her labors----and its all natural!!! Happy Homebirthing!!!!!!

I just wanted to thank you for being out on the web for women in search of homebirth resources. Two years ago, a week before Thanksgiving, in Lamar, Arkansas (USA), I had my first child at home, attended by midwives. My main midwife was my husband's aunt (a lay midwife) and I am very happy to have had the loving, noninterfering, support I got from her. I was able to stay at home from the onset of my first contraction until the birth of my beautiful daughter. I had lots of friends and family come to enjoy my birth experience and see my little girl being born. My midwife also helped educate me about my labor many months before the first contraction. I read everything I could get my hands on and I feel that I had the ultimate birth I could have had due to this education. I can't wait to have another baby at home. I am very thankful for my beautiful girl and the beautiful women who supervised the birth process.

I attended homebirths for 8 years but now I'm the unit manager of a midwife unit in a semi rural hospital....trying to change the system from the inside.Three of the midwives in the unit still attend homebirths and they keep the rest of us on our toes!! Wonderful site! I've been going through it for hours now. I've been intersted in becoming a midwife since I was a child. I'm thinking of going back to school and changing my profession. Currently I'm a social worker which I figure can only help me in becoming a midwife. I'm a single mother of a 15 year old boy so I probably won't be able to enter any program full-time until he graduates high school as I have to keep working to support him. Meanwhile I'm trying to read as much as I can. There appear to be many options in becoming a midwife and I don't know which route to take. I'd rather not go to nursing school unless I have to. I need to do this so I can practice legally and am confused if I have to complete a nursing program first. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm intested in finding about schooling programs in the US as well as other countries. Once my son is on his own I wouldn't mind moving to attend a good program. I really enjoy your site. Found it by the NOCIRC page.

Our area had no practicing midwives at the time of my last child's birth. We fortunately had a Dr. who was willing to oversee a homebirth. I gave birth to a 12 1/2 lb. boy. There were no complications, no tearing, and it was the easiest labour and delivery of my 4 children (my smallest was 8lbs. 3 oz.) Now there are 3 midwives in our area.

My husband & I are seriously thinking about becoming pregnance and want to have a home birth - preferable even a water birth. We live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Trouble is insurance. The independent plan that I'm on now does not cover home births. We cannot switch me onto my husband's plan until it is "open" in January, and even then we're not sure if they will cover it. We want to be pregnance soon!

How much does an average home birth cost if we were to pay for it on our own? How difficult would it then be to get the child onto a health plan? Help!!! Does anyone have good advice or suggestions for us? Please contact us.

I've been told by midwives in my community that I will need to "prove my worth" as an apprentice, before I can begin a study with a preceptor. I'm not quite sure where to begin in my pre-apprenticeship education. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction. The pointers I've received have been kind of vague, probably because of how busy the midwives around here are! I've been told that the best way to begin a direct-entry program is to be certified with the CEA, but it is rather expensive to study with them. I am a Nursing student and mother of four. Midwifery has always been an interest of mine, although all of my children were born in hospitals. This is due to the fact that in my home town there were no midwives at the time of the first birth(1988). In later births our insurance did not cover them. It has always been a regret of mine not to of seeked further. I would have much preferred the more natural and personal approach over the distant relationships and old fashioned ideas of most of my doctors. I seriously consider steering my career in that direction. Keep up the wonderful work!!

I am a strong supporter of midwivery. I had my son delivered by a nurse midwife in 1982, but then moved to an area where midwives were not visible and I had my daughters delivered by ob's. All natural births however. I did my comp II research work on natural childbirth. I am now a feature writer for a small tri-weekly newspaper in NC. I am hoping to do an article on a local woman who has delivered at home three times now. Hello to you all. Surfing the net for a friend on Mothercraft and Midwifery and came across your page. Interesting page with many different articles and notes. Liked the jokes. Can appreciate many of the situation. A Friend of mine is writting her thesis about the emotional turmoil created when mother and baby are moved to a different location for further treatment of the baby. Her findings are quit interesting in so much as to how Parents try to cope with the emotional and financial trauma associated with the transfer of their new born baby.

In Australia we have followed the English model of care where Mother and baby are healthy until proven otherwise. This led to the Midwife being the primary care giver. Only when Mother or Baby are at risk, or develop a problem, then do the Medical Profession receive a call to take over the care.

Anyway good luck with your quest for private and primary care giver rights.

Your pages are a wonderful resource on midwifery. I planned giving birth with a midwife, and I had all my prenatal appointments with the University Hospital midwives. However, it was decided that I should be induced and it was at a time when all of the midwives were out of town. My birth was not what I had envisioned, but quite the reverse, and now I am realizing it is because I couldn't do it as I planned. Seeing this page reawakened in me the possibility for a nurturing and involved birth experience, and I thank you. I had really lost any desire to have another baby, but now I have a seed planted in my mind that says, "Maybe."

For my first three sons, I had a CNM deliver them in the hospital, but with my fourth, I had a regular dr due to a move. Even in the hospital setting, the difference between dr and midwife is appearant. I also had pre-eclampsia with my first three sons and with my fourth, due to Dr. Brewer's book, I did not have the dreaded complication. Protein really is the answer to all the problems for this syndrome. I have always wanted to have the most natural of childbirths. After a miscarriage at an early age with uncaring doctors and a nurse who said I should be glad my baby died, I have not relished hospitals. I am praying that the next year or so I will be able to have a child of my own with the comfort of a midwife. Although I have to convience my husband! It was nice to know you received my e-mail. We were kind of lost in cyberspace for awhile but luckily thru the help of friends we are back. I was wondering if you knew of any statistics relating to vaginal births for women who have herpes. I have heard of sucess but the info is kind of limited. Here in nj, only cnm's are "legal" to perform homebirths. I have one but she is about an hour and a half away from where I live. I also know some wonderful laymidwives but I'm afraid to use them only because in the event of an outbreak during labor I would have to go to a hospital and be uncertain of any outcome. I have to say this situation has caused much turmoil within myself and at times consider not having any babies at all. I just hate the idea of any intervention at all. When you get a chance let me know what you think. I'd really appreciate it.

Just got back from the Level 1 Midwifery Assistant Program in Tenn. I had a great time, learned a lot, and bonded with a lot of beautiful sisters. I highly recommend this program for all aspiring midwives! The Farm midwives are incredible women. (As I think all midwives are!) I'll be back in the Autumn of 1998 for Level 2. It's definitely worth the $$. :)

Love the site. Information about where I work. A midwife led unit with about 400 deliveries a year. Really small and homely. We work in small teams of midwives, and give care thro' all stages of pregnancy, labour (at home and in Hospital) and the postnatal period. We have really good times and are part of the local community, from whom we have great support.

I am sixteen and would (maybe, possibly) like to be a midwife. Actually, if my mom will give in and allow me to homeschool for this semester, I will try to find a local midwife who could maybe use an assistant (untrained, willing to learn.) But although I've convinced my sister, my counselor, my school guidance counselor, etc., my mother is afraid of the idea of my not being in these beige-walled, windowless rooms for seven hours every day. Right, as though I'll learn anything useful here! I love children generally, especially from about birth to age four, and other things I would like to do with my life include work in a daycare center and in a living history museum. So midwifery isn't such an odd idea, in comparison! By the way, I was born at home with the help of midwives, as were my sis and brother. Currently they are trying to pass legislation here requiring midwives to be CNMs. Makes me angry--Dad says the AMA "has Ohio tightly in hand." Ugh. Anyway, ! gotta go, bell's gonna ring and I have to go to Latin. Bye! And best wishes. And I love your page. It's exactly what I was looking for.

I am interested in becoming a direct-entry midwife. I have visited MANA's home page, but have not found an address, e-mail address or phone number where I can get more information on NARM requirements. I have no background in nursing and cannot afford to go to nursing school, but I am willing to work as an apprentice under a qualified midwife to gain the necessary skills and knowledge. Alas, I live in the "bastion of conservatism" and can't even get a midwife to return my calls (I found 3 clinics in the city and they're all CNMs). I know direct-entry is legal in Kansas, but how do I become one if no one will train me????? Any ideas, comments, etc. would be helpful.

Thank you for your excellent page. What a great way this is to research midwifery. I am a 28 year old with a 9 month old baby delivered with midwives (planned home birth with transfer to hospital after a long labour - all turned out well naturally!) I would very much like to begin gaining some experience now to increase my chances of being accepted into McMaster's midwifery program in 3 years. I am feeling slightly down as I see that most 'wannabes' already have some sort of nursing or healthcare experience. I have nothing but a strong desire to enter the midwifery profession. Hi! I really like your web page a lot. Very balanced; informative and creative.I've been a homebirth,non-nurse midwife for 12 years, got a BSN 2 years ago and became a RN midwife, (but not a CNM - as I have been told many times), went to CNM school, will graduate this May, take boards in June and become a CNM. I am a student at JCC here in NC. Trying to finish my Nursing degree(after 12 years). Then plan to go on to get my Midwifery license. I'm about 1 year away from finishing. THANK THE LORD!!! So great to catch up with your page--makes me feel like i'm not so far from "home" Watta and I have found an incredible place in Half Moon Bay, on a horse farm with llamas and emus, just a couple of miles from the beach. Terri was seeking general info re local current affairs in Tallahassee, where we recently moved from Los Angeles. Both of our boys were born at home, in L.A., with a midwife from Tallahassee who also happened to have moved there from Tally. I believe birth is normal. The use and abuse of drugs in this country is way out of proportion to the safety and cost effectiveness of the benefits. Birth works perfectly, until medical personal start to intervene when there are no complications. The only group that benefits from the use of drugs in labor are the people administering and getting paid for doing them We need more positive reinforcement about the drug free birth experience. I challenge everyone to try to make a difference in childbirth in America!

Thank You for your comments on the MALE MIDWIFE, I am a male Midwife student in Orlando, Fl and know how hard It will be for me. I do feel the attitudes I get from some Midwifes are justified, given the domination men have had in medicine. I must also say that all the clients I've met so far have accepted me just fine. I have been involved in several births and my presence was requested in many of them..I believe one should be measured by the content of the heart and not the sins of others. Midwifery is now coming back into main stream medicine, and will have an major role in our health care system as a whole.I will be there when this happens and I,in todays ever changing world, will find my place. I am interested in finding out more about the process of midwifery. I am newly pregnant, and would like to make an informed decision if this would or could be an option over the medical model of birthing. Found your page whilst surfing for articles of interest. Am distressed by the difficulty with which Midwives in the USA seem to work. Midwives are a respected member of the general community here with workplaces, fields of interest and places to study wide ranging and readily available. Home births are slowly on the increase with birth centres run by team midwives very popular.Most midwives who choose to work in hospital settings are very interested in the holistic approach to childbirth and see their role as one of bridging the gap between that view and the technoctratic rituals commonly employed by the medical fraternity.

Thanks for letting me view your web site. I am a nurse now living in Mc Call Idaho. I've been here 4yrs now. I had been living in the Sun Valley area doing home births a long time ago......I was asked to stop by my Director of nursing. Anyway, the doctor I was working with had to stop also.....he was threatened by his partners with a law suit. Needless to say he stopped. In the meantime he has since moved on and is doing missionary work in Africa { where he is more appreciated}. I do miss this area in my life. This is not an option in this area at this time. My husband and I used a midwifery for the birth of our first child. There was three midwives that took care of us through the entire pregnancy. Each one of them were very caring and always made our pregnancy seem very special. When the day came for our special bundle to be born (a son), we felt like we had an extended family there with us witnessing this special event. It was fantastic and we plan to use the midwifery for our second child as well!

I had a wonderful experience with useing a Midwife for my first child. I am now pregnant again and want to use my same midwife, however I have been placed on Paxil and Klonopin for anxiety and panic attacks. Is it possible to still use the miwife? Other then being on the medication I am in great health. I plan to be weaned from the klonopin by my third trimester.. what do you suggest?

I live in a very small town and I really know that I am a midwife, I just need the training. Trouble is, I can't find a midwife close to apprentice with, that would be ideal for me to learn that way, I have very little funds for a corespondence course, I am a full time home maker, stay at hom mom , with a 4 year old, and a homeschooled 13 year old. I've read averything I can get-but I feel it's not helping if I can't be apprenticed or go to a school? Any sugestions!?!

dig your site. i am about to birth my first child (literally any day) at a birthing center here in charlotte, with midwives. i have been interested for some time in pursuing a career in midwifery yet i felt a woman who had not actually birthed was not as well suited as a woman who had expirienced a birth. now that i (will) fall into that catagory i am looking to find out more of my options in becoming a midwife.
